DES MOINES, Iowa – Retiring senator Tom Harkin’s legacy arrived in Des Moines Monday.

About 800 boxes of papers were shipped from Harkin’s office to Drake University. They will be stored in the library and made available for research at the school’s Harkin Institute of Public Policy.

The boxes contain 40 years worth of material, from correspondence to campaign and press releases. But there are some items researchers will have to wait for.

“The senator’s committee records, his agriculture committee records, his health committee records. Those remain sealed for 25 years from the date of creation. So those will roll out every year there will be another set of committee records that will be accessible,” archivist Hope Grebner explained.

Harkin’s electronic records are also being sent to Drake.
