DES MOINES, Iowa – Westboro Baptist Church says they will picket outside a Des Moines high school next week because the nation’s youth “have been lied to.”

The controversial group will picket the Iowa State Capitol Building next Monday from 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. They will then head over to East High School from 12:30 p.m. 1 p.m.

The group explained they are protesting because, “the youth in this nation have absolutely no hope.”

Pickets are also planned at a school and church in Davenport and a church in Bettendorf.

The church was founded in Topeka, Kansas and has drawn criticism for its pickets at funerals and beliefs on homosexuality.

Cancel school for the day and if the press doesn’t show up they would have no reason to stay. As long as they get attention they will continue to do this.

  • Save All Wolves

I agree with Justice…..They wouldn’t do these types of things if the media would not give them the attention they are looking for!! Close school and no one bother to show…..

I certainly hope DMPD keeps it all safe and legal. And, I hope WHO-TV News reports on any Iowans joining in on the festivities.

Maybe state house folks and East High students should take a trip to Topeka and picket their “church”. Better hurry, though: From what I read, they won’t have paved roads in Kansas much longer.

So according to the story they are picketing just to picket? There isn’t a singular reason why this Des Moines school was chosen?

    • John Smith

Proximity to their earlier engagement at the Capitol, I reckon. Note the intended schedule: In both cases, it looks like their goal is to get onto midday news coverage. The chosen venues are just backdrop scenery for their little dramas, I imagine.

You call your self Baptist or Christian . But yet your breaking a ton of God’s biggest rules and sinning your selves the end is near and you will be caught pointing your fingers and using gods house to do so. 1. Though shalt not judge . 2. Love your neighbor 3. 20 If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? 21 And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their fellow believers. 1 John 4:20 4. “Love your neighbor as yourself.”# 10Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.
11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.

Please see above. They have scheduled 30 Minutes for themselves and the TV cameras to get to a High School from their earlier show at the State Capitol. East High is the closest choice. I imagine that is the only significance. Oh, that and EHS is probably deemed a better back drop for the cameras than, say, Tech would be. More front lawn, better camera angles, etc.

Frankly, I am rather surprised these folks don’t just “picket” in front of a green screen and then insert different backgrounds depending on the occasion.

suprise they didnt pick north highschool or central campus due to their jrotc program that i am apart of.

So they are picketing East because it’s close to the capitol, and they are picketing the capitol because the youth in this country have no hope? Seems vague, I’d like to know the specifics on this. What’s got them all riled up and Des Moines as the target?

Hey BJERK BAG…call your buddy Al Notsosharpton…maybe ya’ll can go to the movies together

ANYONE, Republican, Democrat, or independent, who meets with these dirtbags , who have desecrated the funerals of our heroic fallen soldiers should be tarred, feathered, and left out in the Artic or the Sahara to rot. They should not be given one second of anyone’s time. May they all be sent to the deepest part of the underworld.

What have any of these people, actually accomplished with their lives. I say let them protest just ignore them. Don’t give them news coverage just completely ignore they exist, what’s a better end for hateful people like that, to be ignored and screaming themselves hoarse in their own twisted homes.

  • RollingThunder55

Makes me almost want to drive by and roll coal all over them…for those who don’t know what that is, black diesel smoke.

These folks are hoping that someone will get out of line with them so that they can file lawsuits. They lawsuits will generate the money and attention that they are craving. They are hoping that the good people will trample their “rights”. Keep it civil, drown their noise out with the tune of a few hundred sets of Rinehart exhaust pipes and they get nothing from our fine city :)

  • Kathy

I don’t think they are worth giving any attention to. These people are not Christians in any way! I am sure Jesus has had it with their stupid shenanigans! What is so sad is that they are filling their childrens heads with all the hatred. They need to just disappear and go back to whatever hole they crawled out of!

Why not find a semi or long trailer and park it in front of these people. Have the driver rev up the engine and silence their yelling. I am sure the people of Des Moines would all chip in for the fuel cost and any fines the police have to issue for illegal parking or violation of noise ord. and so on.

IMO, DesMoines Public SChools should have them removed from the premises as they pose a “risk” to the students (is someone checking them for weapons, cigarettes, etc (none of those are allowed on school property). if they want to picket across the street on someone else’s property or on city property they can.

I’m not from DesMoines, but parents and the DSM School Board should be seeing if this is even alowable on school premises (pretty sure it’s not, as the courts have ruled that students do not have the right to “free speech” at school or on school property, therefore these people do not have the right to assembly either).

    • nash

You’re all cowards. These people are exercising their right to free speech. You don’t like what they have to say, walk away. Politically correct, brainwashed fools with no sand or character except what your masters in America allow.Be gone.

Everyone has the right to express, that means you, me, and John Q Public. I, personally don’t understand all the fuss. Maybe I’m way off base, but aren’t we all, in our own way trying to promote some peace, love, and understanding? Wouldn’t that be a great world? A world of acceptance? My straight son will be at this rally on the side for homosexuality, standing up for his friends. Proud of him. Kinda makes me want to gather my “fatty” girls and bust down some weight watchers meetings.
