DES MOINES, Iowa — Two people have been jailed after police say they found a baby in their closet near a loaded gun.
Twenty-seven-year-old Philip Barber and 22-year-old Kelsey Kenworthy of Des Moines are charged with child endangerment.
Police say they were called to the couple’s apartment in the 6700 block of Southeast 5th Street early Tuesday morning after a neighbor reported hearing a loud altercation.
During an inspection of the apartment an officer says he heard crying coming from a closet. When he opened the door he saw an eight-month-old baby sitting in a car seat near a loaded gun and a box of ammunition.
Officers also say it appeared Barber and Kenworthy were under the influence of narcotics because they had large sores all over their faces and arms and were unable to stop moving.
Drug paraphernalia was found around the apartment.
Barber and Kenworth are both in the Polk County Jail.
The child was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.
