DES MOINES, Iowa - One person is dead and another is in custody following a shooting on Des Moines' south side Sunday.

Police responded to a home located at 321 East Diehl Avenue shortly before 5:10 p.m. Sunday for a report of a homicide. While en route to the scene, officers were told the suspect was in a nearby residence.

Officers located the body of a 35-year-old man inside the home at 321 East Diehl. The victim died from gunshot wounds.

Police said following the shooting the suspect called his girlfriend and admitted to the crime. The girlfriend then called police.

The suspect quickly surrendered after being contacted by authorities. "They (officers) saw movement next door in the 325 address not knowing that it was suspect," Sgt. Jason Halifax said. "Dispatch contacted that individual by phone. They spoke with him on the phone and he made admissions to them as well about being involved in the homicide."

Investigators believe an argument lead to the shooting.

The suspect is being questioned by authorities and no charges have been filed as of 8 p.m.  Sunday.

The names of the victim and the suspect are not being released at this time.

This is the second death investigation Des Moines Police have conducted Sunday.
