Workout of the Week: Pound Away Pounds

DES MOINES, Iowa - If you like to rock out while you're working out, Pound may be just what you're looking for.  It combines cardio, Pilates, isometric and plyometric exercises in one, 45 minute fat-burning session.  The only gear required:  A yoga mat and rip sticks, which look like drum sticks, but weigh about twice as much.

"It's really fun," said Johanna Determann.  "The word I think of when I think of Pound is fun."

Determann is one of only two certified Pound instructors in the Des Moines area.

"I would say it's probably the most interesting and energizing class I've ever taught."

The Pound music tracks are made up of rock, rap, pop and old school music.  The goal is to get the entire body moving.  The pounding of the sticks against each other and on the floor echoes through the gym.  In addition to helping participants keep the beat, the rip sticks offer some resistance.

"It’s a cardio jam session where you do a lot of different exercises," said Determann.

During the course of the session, you'll complete roughly 30 intervals and thousands of reps.

"If you came into a group fitness class and the instructor told you you'd be doing 800 squats and 1000 lunges, you’d probably walk out," laughed Determann.  "But you don’t realize you’re doing them because you’re doing them in different ways and to music."

And because the workouts are all pre-choreographed, participants can take the same class Des Moines, New York or LA.

"It’s really fun because the participants get really good at it."

So, whether you're pounding away the pounds, or pounding out the stress, you'll soon be a member of the "Pound Posse."

You can register for the next eight week Pound class through the Des Moines Public Schools Community Education Department.  Classes start March 31, 2015.
