AMES, Iowa-  One person died following a house fire in Ames late Sunday night.

Emergency crews responded to the home at 1322 Illinois Street at about 11 p.m. Sunday. When crews arrived on the scene the house was fully engulfed in flames.

Two people were able to escape from the home by jumping from a second story window. Carl Boese, 27, and Lin Yang, 26, were taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames for treatment. A third person was in the home and died in the fire. Their identity is not being released at this time.

One of the victims told neighbors they had a fire pit in back of the house and thought it was extinguished before they went in. Neighbors said flames were shooting high into the air, and being blown by the wind.  One neighbor said he was concerned the home to the north would catch fire.

Ames Fire Chief Shawn Bayouth said a cause has not been determined and the fire remains under investigation.
