DES MOINES, Iowa — A train derailment on Des Moines’ east side is causing some traffic problems Tuesday morning.
Seven cars of a Union Pacific train bound for Kansas City, Missouri derailed in the 2000 block of Hull Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Officials with the railroad say four of the cars were empty, two were loaded with soy flakes, and one contained roofing shingles.
The road is now blocked and it will be closed for most of the day while the accident is cleared up. Repairs also need to be made to the tracks.
The cause of the derailment is being investigated.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find another route.
