DES MOINES, Iowa – A man was charged on Thursday for previously sending a suspicious letter to the Blazing Saddle.

The letter that was sent to the local gay bar contained slurs toward members of the LGBT community and a mysterious white powder that was purported to be hazardous. The powder was later determined to be harmless and a criminal investigation was initiated.

Des Moines Police Detectives made contact earlier on Thursday with Eric Reece Wiethorn, 49, of Ames. He admitted to sending the letter in March and was arrested for first-degree harassment. He was transported to Polk County Jail, according to the Des Moines Police Department.

The Des Moines Police Department and the Des Moines Fire Department Hazmat Team initially responded to the Blazing Saddle at 416 E. 5th St. back on March 27 when the letter was sent.

The Des Moines Police Department was able to locate Wiethorn through an anonymous tip.
