Drake Relays Hold Grand Blue Mile Race Tuesday

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake Relays kick into high gear in downtown Des Moines Tuesday night.

The Grand Blue Mile begins just after 6 p.m., with around 4,500 runners expected to participate. The competitive divisions, featuring Olympic and world champion runners, begin around 7 p.m.

Overall, $30,000 in prize money could be handed out Tuesday.

There will be several road closures because of the Grand Blue Mile.

Starting at 9 a.m. Grand Avenue from 10th to 14th will be shut down as well as sections of 11th, 12th, and 13th street around it.

At 3 p.m. Locust will close from 15th to 13th street. Then at 6 p.m. Grand closes from 6th to 10th, Locust closes from 13th Street to 6th Avenue, as well as 6th from Locust to Grand.

Expect some minor delays in the area.

Wednesday the decathlon, heptathlon, and pole vault competitions begin.
