WINTERSET, Iowa -- A metro mother is speaking out after she said personal items left on her son's grave site in Winterset were stolen.

“I come down last Sunday to notice things were missing, ornaments were missing stuff that his friends had left and this is the first time for him stuff has come up missing,” Brenda Jones of Ankeny said.

Jones said not everything is gone but special items like a drum stick left from a friend and gifts she brought down for her son Wade.

“I'm angry, to think it's bad enough that we have to lay our loved ones to rest but for someone to come down here and steal from them.”

Even items Jones took time to secure are gone.

“I zip tied the hanging basket due to the wind and as you can see there's no zip tie so it's obviously been cut,” Jones said.

Jones said it's not just her son; her grandparent’s grave also has had items disappear.

“They have stolen from my grandparent’s grave site numerous times. Flowers, hanging plants, my grandparent’s cement deer that he's had for years.”

Jones said she wishes the cemetery closed the gates at dusk, provided more lighting and even some type of security cameras to catch whoever is doing this to her loved ones.

“All we have left is the memories that we built together and this is where we have to come to visit with them and to keep them at peace, and then to come down here and to find out things have been stolen or vandalized there's no reason why there is no cameras here,” Jones said.

Channel 13 reached out to the Winterset Cemetery staff but did not hear back.

Jones said she reported the activity and was told there is nothing they can do.
