Summer Meal Program to Offer More Sites & Meals this June

DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines Public Schools will offer more meals at more sites than before for children 18 and under this summer.

The Summer Food Service Program will start on June 8, with 33 meal sites throughout Des Moines offering lunches for kids. 25 of those sites will also offer breakfast. Des Moines Public Schools have offered a summer meal program  for the past 30 years, funding it through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Officials say last year, the district served children 28,722 breakfasts and 79,698 lunches, and expect those numbers to increase with more options this year.

Meals will be provided on weekdays, with the exception of July 3. Sites and times are listed below:

  • Brody Middle School, 2501 Park Avenue: 8:30 a.m. to noon, June 8 through July 17
  • Callanan Middle School, 3010 Center Street: 8:30 a.m. to noon, June 8 through July 17
  • Capitol View Elementary, 320 E. 16th Street: 8 to 11:30 a.m., June 8-26 and July 27 through Aug. 18
  • Carver Elementary, 705 E. University Avenue: 8 to 11:30 a.m., June 8 through Aug. 14
  • Crivaro Park, Southeast 14th Street and Roadroad: 11:45 a.m., June 8 through Aug. 14
  • Drake Park, 24th Street and Cottage Grove: 11:30 a.m., June 8 through Aug. 14
  • Evelyn K. Davis Park, 16th Street and Forest Avenue: 11 a.m., June 8 through Aug. 14
  • Garton Elementary School, 2820 E. 24th Street: 8:30-10:45 a.m., June 8 through July 17
  • Goodrell Middle School, 3300 E. 29th Street: 8:30 a.m. to noon, June 8 through July 17
