MARION, Iowa -- Police in Marion are investigating a homicide that happened in broad daylight in the parking lot of a grocery store.

It happened around 4 p.m. on Tuesday outside the Marion Hy-Vee along Highway 151.

Officers say 32-year-old Nicholas Luerkens went up to 29-year-old Lynnsey Donald as she was exiting the store and stabbed her. She later died and then Luerkens allegedly tried to kill himself, but was stopped. He’s now hospitalized and expected to survive.

Police say Luerkens and Donald lived together up until a few months ago.

The Hy-Vee store never closed.
