Local Athletes Star on Friday at Drake Relays

DES MOINES - Mother nature tried to spoil Friday at the blue oval, but to no avail.  Rain soaked the track but that didn't stop some local runners from setting new Relays records.

 

Local Winners on the Boys Side:

1600 Sprint Medley- Dowling Catholic (C Deskin, J Gorsche, M Kasap, R Schweizer) win  in a time of 3:26.48, a new relays record.  The Maroons broke Linn-Mar's record which was set just last year.  Johnston finished 3rd.

Discus- Erik Nelson of Waukee wins the school's first individual boys championship with a throw of 187-08, a new school record.

800- Ryan Schweizer of Dowling Catholic brings home another title for the Maroons in a time of 1:52.15, which is also a new relays record.  Daniel Chan of Ames finishes in 2nd.

 

Local Winners on the Girls Side:

800 Sprint Medley- Boone (P Lyons, B Aspengren, B Schminke, D Slight) holds off all the big schools in a time of 1:46.43

100 Meter Dash- Roosevelt's Briyana Carter continues the Roughriders dominance in the 100, winning in a time of 12.13 seconds, which ties the all-time mark set in 2003.  This is the 5th straight 100 Meter title at the Drake Relays for the Roosevelt girls.   Kari Dufoe of ADM finished in 2nd.

 

Other notables:  Waukee girls took 2nd in the 4X200 relay, the Warrior boys finished 3rd.  Hunter Weldon of Albia finished 2nd in the 100 M dash, Knoxville's Tanner Dunkin was 3rd.  Deonne Harris of Newton took 3rd in the 110 hurdles, and Waukee's Erika Lewis finished 3rd in the 800.
