WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- A-24-year-old Minnesota man is in critical condition after taking a bullet to the abdomen.

West Des Moines police found Daroyce Mills of Burnsville lying in the parking lot of the Val Air Ballroom just before 2 a.m.

Investigators said they have no suspects in the case, but there are no shortage of witnesses to the shooting. It happened just after a concert ended.

“We had officers down at the Val Air Ballroom directing traffic, helping to empty out the parking lot after a concert, and while directing traffic, they heard a gun shot, responded to the scene and found the victim,” said West Des Moines Police Sgt. Brent Kock.

Officers stayed with Mills until medics arrived and rushed him to the hospital. The extent of his injuries are not known at this time.

“I think of my safety. I think of other people's safety,” said neighbor Mike Marasco.

Marasco has lived behind the Val Air for the last decade and slept through the chaos after the concert. He says what happened just across the parking lot is concerning.

“Bullets can go anywhere. They're using real bullets and they'll go through a window very easily,” he said.

If you can help West Des Moines Police identify a suspect, you're asked to call Polk County Crimestoppers at 223-1400. Tips can be texted to CRIMES. Any information that leads to an arrest could be worth a $1,000 reward.
