United States Senator Joni Ernst is ending her military career.

Ernst says she plans to retire from the Iowa Army National Guard within the next year.

During a taping of Iowa Press, Ernst said it’s been difficult to balance work as a Senator with her obligation to the Guard and her desire to spend time with her family.

Ernst has served since 1993 and was elected to the Senate in November.
