BAXTER, Iowa — Law enforcement had to use tear gas to end a standoff overnight in Jasper County.

The Baxter Police Department requested help from Jasper County deputies Tuesday night, after getting a tip that a man was making threats on social media that he was going to hurt himself.

Officers set up a perimeter around the man’s house after they saw him inside with a sword. The man told officers he wanted them to shoot him.

Numerous officers were on scene and people living in the area were alerted of an emergency.

Negotiations continued for more than an hour before officers deployed tear gas into the home, and the man came out peacefully. Paramedics took him to the hospital for a mental evaluation.

No charges have been filed at this time.
