DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican, playfully tried to reassure the wife of Governor Terry Branstad that he would be safe taking part in her first annual "Roast and Ride" event, which features a motorcycle ride to the site in Boone.

Branstad has said he isn't sure his wife would like the idea of him getting on the motorcycle, although he added that he has been on the bike in the past.

"I would make sure that he was wearing all the appropriate personal protection gear," Ernst said. "We'll get him in a helmet."

And she added, "Maybe some leathers, I think the governor would really look good in leathers."

Seven likely Republican presidential candidates have already confirmed to Ernst they would attend her June 6 event.

Confirmed guests include:

Ben Carson, retired neurosurgeon

Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard

Lindsey Graham, U.S. Senator from South Carolina

Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas Governor

Rick Perry, former Texas Governor

Marco Rubio, U.S. Senator from Florida

Scott Walker, Wisconsin Governor

Walker is the only guest to say he will ride a Harley Davidson motorcycle at the event.
