LAKE CITY, Iowa – The students of South Central Calhoun High School were back in school on Monday.
Students returned to school for the first time since a tornado ripped through their town on May 10. The EF-1 tornado and devastating storm ended up pulling the roof off of the high school while more than 100 people were attending an awards ceremony inside.
Students received an extra week-long Spring Break because of the severe weather. During that time, they were helping clean up the town, which made it possible for them to ultimately return to class.
With the building still unusable for at least the rest of the school year, students attended classes in different places around the downtown Lake City Square on Monday. Those areas included the community center, movie theater, library, and churches.
This arrangement will continue to be the setup until the school year ends on May 28.
