ANKENY, Iowa–An Ankeny family credits online learning for helping their son thrive.

Iowa Connections Academy is an accredited tuition free alternative option for several Iowa families.

The academy is not only growing in popularity but helping more and more students succeed outside the traditional brick and mortar classroom.

Blake Eilers of Ankeny just finished his junior year at Iowa Connections Academy.

“The day can be anything you want, you can choose what time you wake up, you make your own schedule and you decide what order you want to do your classes in,” says Blake Eilers.

Blake’s Mom, Jane said he was struggling in junior high and she was excited to have Blake try high school in a different environment, he started at Iowa Connections Academy for his freshman year.

“I think it`s been an amazing transformation, he wasn’t engaging in school or with peers in 8th grade and now he engaging once again with school, with peers.”

Iowa Connections Academy is a public charter school started in 2012 and serves students in grades K-12.

For Blake it was a way to learn on his own terms.

“It`s worked better for me so I’ve enjoyed it more and enjoying it more has given me a reason to get more involved in it,” says Blake Eilers.

The academy provides Iowa certified teachers who give lessons live through videos.

Students can interact with their teachers and other students through chat rooms and email.

Jane says it’s easy for her to see all Blake’s accomplished.

He was recently inducted into the National Honor Society.

Now she’s looking forward to him completing his senior year, online.

“I think he`s afforded a lot of opportunities that I’m not sure he would have had and it`s been amazing to watch him grow academically and watch his confidence start to grow,” says Jane Eilers.

Last Saturday, the Iowa Connections Academy had its largest graduating class of 30 students.

The academy is hoping that number continues to grow and more people learn about its unique approach to online learning.
