INDIANOLA, Iowa -- A Simpson College baseball coach was killed in a one-vehicle accident Monday night.
Sixty-five-year-old Joe Blake Sr. died when he lost control of his vehicle and it rolled on a curve at G-36 and 150th Street. Blake was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Blake was the pitching coach at Simpson College where his son Ben Blake is the head coach. Another son, Casey Blake, played in the MLB for more than 10 years. Two other sons also played professional baseball.
Simpson College released a statement Tuesday morning about Blake’s passing.
“Simpson athletics has lost a friend, a hall of famer and an icon,” Director of Athletics Brian Niemuth said. “Joe Blake represented the best of Simpson College. He had the right attitude, a competitive spirit, a tireless work ethic and above all, was a great person. Joe will be sorely missed by all of us.”
