DES MOINES, Iowa-- Saturday will be the day that food trucks get to showcase their custom cuisine in Des Moines. At 5 p.m., 12 trucks will compete in the first Iowa Beverage Food Truck Throw Down at the Des Moines Social Club.

“Good food, creative options and atmosphere,” said Dwight Lykins.

Dwight Lykins is the president of the food truck association, Legion of Food, and he has waited a long time for an event like this.

“It’s a culmination of a lot of hard work,” said Lykins. “It was about 30 food truck vendors that pioneered this.”

Lykins is excited to share food trucks with his hometown of Des Moines.

“Food trucks culture is a thing of its own,” said Lykins. “The food options in the trucks are something Des Moines hasn’t seen before.”

Powered by Fries provides those unique food options Lykins is speaking of.

“You have to try the Golden Sticks of Happiness,” said Amy Carrell with Powered by Fries. “They are double cut fresh fries with Korean bbq, kimchi with a pepper crème sauce.”

Organizers at the Des Moines Social Club say they never expected this to have the turnout it now looks likely to have.

"When we came up with the idea for this event, we said, 'Yeah, let's get some bands, let's get some beer, let's get some food trucks.' The guys from Iowa Beverage Systems brought this event to us and we talked about it, and we thought if 500 people showed up, we had a couple of food trucks, it'd be great," said Mickey Davis, Program Manager for the Social Club. "As soon as we announced it, it seemed like momentum just took off. We're looking at something like 9,000 RSVPs on Facebook, which is crazy. I don't know how much faith you can put in a number on Facebook, because it's a free event, but if any fraction of that shows up, it's going to be a great afternoon and evening."

The event will also feature live music and beer pairing for the food. It is free to attend.
