VINTON, Iowa — A 20-month-old boy was hurt when officers tried to use a taser on his father and it was all caught on video from the officer’s body camera.

Vinton police were responding to a domestic call and say the suspect, Joshua Hendryx, refused to come outside the home. That’s when they say he used his toddler as a human shield.

The officer deployed the taser when it was clear, but one of the barbs hit the boy in the ankle when Hendryx suddenly moved.

“It was a split second decision, I’m just glad the child wasn’t hurt seriously, and I’m glad the victim was able to be reunited with the child,” said Chief Ted Paxton.

The police chief says he stands behind the officer’s decision to use his taser and he will not be placed on leave.

Hendryx is facing multiple charges.
