DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Capital City is showing its pride this weekend.

The theme for this year's PrideFest is "Back to Heart". The celebration focuses on the roots of gay pride in Des Moines.

Festivities kicked off with a block party in the East Village Saturday.

Pride fest began 37 years ago with a small group of men and women who marched up to the Capitol in celebration of the LGBT community.

"Over 37 years ago. There was a group of us that walked to the capital; and walked back, and that was pride. Now we've got up to 16,000 to 20,000 people. Straight, gay, bi, it doesn't matter who they are,” says Robert Eikleberry.

The parade begins at 1:00 p.m. Sunday and starts at E. Grand and E. 12th.
