BOONE COUNTY, Iowa — A Nevada woman is in the hospital after falling approximately 40 feet from a cliff.

19-year-old Shannon Novak was hiking along the Lost Lake Trail on the southwest side of Ledges State Park around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday when she fell.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Novak lost her footing and fell from an outcropping, known as Solstice Rock, over the Des Moines River. She was conscious and talking when rescuers arrived to the scene.

Novak injured her back and ankle due to the fall. Rescuers took her by boat to a waiting ambulance downstream because of the rugged terrain.
