Walnut Creek Crests at Record Level in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa - Walnut Creek in Des Moines reached a record crest Thursday morning following flash flooding Wednesday night.

The creek reached 18.8 feet at 63rd Street in Des Moines, nearly five feet about flood stage. The previous record of 18.6 feet was set in 2010. Hydrologists said the creek is normally four feet deep.

Officials lowered a flood gate at 63rd and Ashworth as the creek was rising Thursday morning. The creek began receding Thursday afternoon and the flood gate was lifted.

As of Thursday afternoon, the creek had dropped to flood stage at 14 feet.
