DES MOINES, Iowa – Des Moines firefighters put out a house fire Saturday morning while the family who lived in the home was away camping.

Crews were called around 2:30 a.m. about a fire in the 3200 block of South Union Street.

“A passerby saw the flaming smoke, stopped, and called us,” said Lt. Roy Fonza with the Des Moines Fire Department. “When we got here, there was fire in the living room so we knocked it down fairly fast.”

Neighbors said the owners of the home were away camping for the weekend and will need to be notified.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
