DES MOINES, Iowa – It was the perfect night for fireworks downtown on Friday night as an Iowa company came prepared to set them off.

Julie McClain with J&M Displays said there were at least 500 shells just for the finale on Friday. McClain has been setting off fireworks for more than 20 years.

She and most of her crew are certified to handle the fireworks. McClain and her husband started off hand firing their displays, but now they use electronic switch boards to run the show.

According to McClain, it’s a much safer alternative when handling fireworks.

“That's exactly what they are, they are explosives or bombs if you want to say,” McClain said. “It's not just for the average person to be dealing with. There are a lot of things that can go wrong but if necessary precautions are taken you can avoid those, which we have fortunately for 20 years.”

The crews have been very busy the past few days, as they also did Thursday’s show at Yankee Doodle Pops. On Saturday night, J&M Displays will be in West Des Moines.
