VAN METER, Iowa – Three local heroes will be honored on Monday night after being involved in a Raccoon River rescue.

Austin Rice, Thomas Rice and Austin Matter were near the Raccoon River on Sunday at approximately 4 p.m. when they heard screams for help. They all ran toward the area and found seven people on tubes caught on debris.

The three boys risked their own lives to pull a 6-year-old boy to safety from the river, while first responders helped rescue the others.

The three of them will be honored with a proclamation from the Mayor at a council meeting around 7 p.m.
