NEWTON, Iowa -- A Prairie City woman has been sentenced for the dog mauling death of a four-year-old.

Jena Wright, 26, was convicted of  child endangerment resulting in serious injury, neglect of a dependent person, assault not causing bodily injury, and interference with official acts causing bodily injury. Police said Wright’s dog Brutis, attacked and killed four-year-old Jordyn Arndt while Wright was babysitting her in April of 2013. Arndt died from her injuries the day after the attack.

Wright said Monday that she wishes she could undo the damage and that she is sincerely sorry. Her parents also spoke at the sentencing.

The victim’s parents each took the stand to read emotional statements to the court, and to Wright.

Jessica Arndt, Jordyn’s mother said she has a hard time going out in public due to people who try to extend sympathies, causing her to relive the death of her daughter again.

“I see Jordan’s face in my dreams,” Arndt told the court. “It’s not the face I should be seeing, it’s the one where she’s in the hospital with a neck brace, her face so swollen, she didn’t even look like my little girl.”

She also told the court that she dreams of Jordan.

“I heard little feet upstairs, but I wake up to relive the pain over and over again,” said Arndt.

Wright said in a statement to the court, she wishes she could undo the damage she did, but cannot. She hopes one day Jordan’s parents can forgive her.

Wright was given the ten-year sentence on the Child Endangerment charge, and on three other counts also received time. The sentences will be served concurrently. She will also be asked to make restitution, that amount will be determined later.
