POLK COUNTY, Iowa -- One man is dead following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning.

Family friends say the man killed in the crash was David Shafer of Saylorville, who was in his early 70's.

Emergency crews responded to the 4900 block of NW 6th Drive shortly after 4:20 a.m. on a report of a single-vehicle accident. When officials arrived, they found that a Chevy truck had struck a pillar of the Interstate 80 overpass on the west side of NW 6th Drive.

Witnesses reported seeing the truck traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it went out of control, struck the pillar and immediately caught fire.

"It doesn’t happen very often in crashes where a vehicle will come into contact with another vehicle or run into a pillar where it crashes and engulfs into flames like that," Major Brent Long of the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. "Its very unusual but when it does occur, it usually is a very high impact that would set something like that off."

Shafer was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
