DES MOINES, Iowa -- Residents of a Des Moines apartment complex are waking up to a change of scenery outside their windows. That's because a massive fire tore through their garage overnight.

It happened at the Seville Apartment Complex at 3707 Grand Avenue around 10 p.m.

When crews got here the garage was already full of flames.

Captain Steve Beckett with the Des Moines Fire Department said, “We took our fire truck around to the north side of the building, the other responding stations came to the south side of the building. So we were able to start knocking the fire down from both sides of the building. We did have an issue with the power lines that were still charged that were running right behind the building.”

“We hear a knock at our door... and it was my neighbor. She told me ‘I think you want to move your car.’ My car was right by our apartment and our apartment is closest to the garages. So we look out the window and sure enough, one of the garages was on fire...they did a good job getting out,” said witness Hanna Jones.

Officials say the structure is considered a total loss.

They say only one vehicle was parked in the garage and the rest was used for storage.

No one was hurt and the investigation into what caused the fire continues.
