DES MOINES, Iowa – The Riverfront YMCA in downtown Des Moines is in its final days.
Crews have begun to demolish the interior of the closed-down building this week, and YMCA officials say the building will be imploded in September. It’s costing the Y about $1 million to take care of the asbestos and demolition.
Preservationists were pushing to preserve the murals on the exterior of the building last fall. Officials say, though that proved to be too difficult to manage, the Y will be working on recreating some of the murals along the exterior of the new Wellmark YMCA on 5th Street and Grand Avenue.
Hubbell Realty Company is tentatively set to purchase the property this fall and has announced plans to convert it into a mixed-use building.
