DES MOINES, Iowa – A brand-new neighborhood is coming to town.
Hubbell Realty Co. broke ground Thursday on a new project west of the East Village and south of the Des Moines Botanical Gardens. The Bridge District will be an entire neighborhood, comprised of market-rate apartments and upscale townhomes to attract a wide variety of demographics.
“We create neighborhoods all over the Greater Des Moines area,” said Hubbell VP of Development, Kris Saddoris. “This is the first time we get to do it in the downtown core, and create an entire neighborhood – not just a project. So, the connectability to all the beautiful things that are around here. Obviously the Botanical Gardens here that have come online, the beautiful Women Achievement Bridge, all the way down to the East Village. All of these things that are here naturally, in a walkable neighborhood. So, it’s a neat place for all those things to come together in one location.”
The project begins with Phase One, featuring a $19.9 million development called Verve @ Bridge District. This development will consist of 128 market-rate apartments. Another development, called Banks @ Bridge District, costing $15.8 million will bring 40 to 50 upscale townhomes with garages to the neighborhood. A park, called Bridges, will also be built in this phase, and utilize a re-purposed old bridge to pay homage to Des Moines’ vibrant public art.
Saddoris says the neighborhood will attract young professionals looking to rent, as well as adults, families and empty-nesters looking for more space but desiring the downtown atmosphere.
“It’s a great place to invest in here, sit on your patio, have a glass of wine, look over downtown, walk down to East Village to have dinner, and leave your car in the garage the whole time,” she said.
There will be five phases total, implemented over the course of the next five years. Phase One will be complete by August 2016.
