DES MOINES, Iowa - Soda will be the center of attention at a new attraction offered at this year's Iowa State Fair, but it's not the kind you'll find on the aisles at a grocery store - this is craft soda, made right here in Des Moines.
"We're trying to push soda in the state of Iowa," said Steven Linn, operating manager of Top of the Vine, as well as its sister attractions, the Iowa Wine Tent and the Iowa Craft Beer Tent. "We've got Court Avenue Brewing Company making us a strawberry soda. We've got ginger beer, root beer, some cream soda - a bunch of different options."
In addition to six craft sodas, Top of the Vine will offer ten different wines from two local wineries each day, rotating through twenty wineries over the course of the fair. It will also rotate six beers daily, offering "more unique beers" than what you'll find down at the Iowa Craft Beer Tent.
Linn says the idea for a craft soda tent came after noticing how many families were drawn to the Iowa Craft Beer Tent each year.
"We've got one root beer tap down there for kids, but what we realized we needed to do was offer something that will pull families up here," he said. "We've got the Grape Stomp right behind us, so there are already a lot of kids and families up here."
Located by Grandfather's Barn in the Iowa State Fairgrounds, there's plenty to do while enjoying the large outdoor patio space Top of the Vine offers. A unique view of downtown Des Moines awaits on one end, while the Grape Stomp contest and a wood-oven pizza stand sit on the other.
