IOWA CITY, Iowa – C.J. Beathard will run the Hawkeye offense this season and won't have to look over his shoulder constantly.

His head coach, Kirk Ferentz, said something clicked with Beathard last October and it’s carried over to this year.

“He’s just kind of taken off and really done a great job and accepted, not only accepted, but embraced being a leader,” said Ferentz. “That’s part of being a quarterback you have to be a leader so I think he’s excited about that.”

Ferentz also said part of Beathard’s improvement as a quarterback is being thrown into difficult situations in order to continue to learn and progress.

“He’s handled it in a real good way, not to say that he hasn’t made some mistakes already in preseason, but those are great learning experiences for him. We’re trying to put him in situations where he maybe will fail a little bit so he can learn and move forward."
