CLINTON COUNTY, Iowa – County officials in Clinton located human remains while trying to put up a retaining wall.

A crew was digging to install the wall near a Clinton County administration building when they found the remains. Officials also found an old newspaper story saying the site was a cemetery back in 1811.

After doing some research city officials learned that there was in fact a cemetery on the land. The remains were supposed to be moved years ago to another cemetery.

"We'll just have to grade everything back," said Clinton County Supervisor John Staszewski. "We can't put a retaining wall up anymore so we have to go to another idea on how to save the hillside."

The construction project is now on hold while the city inspects the site for possibly more remains. Officials say the site will now have to be rezoned as a cemetery site.
