BAYARD, Iowa --The holiday weekend’s flash flooding caused evacuations at Springbrook State Park in Bayard.

“I think we became aware about three o`clock in the morning letting the campers know they could go if they wish. The water was starting to touch on both sides of the ridge and everybody who`s camped here knows if you`re going to go you better get to going,” says campground host Karen Esslinger.

Esslinger says there were 80 units staying at the campground over the weekend and all but two dozen campers decided to evacuate.

The campground has several low-lying bridges that have flooded in the past, but Esslinger says Sunday’s storm came in quick.

“We`re been flooded before but that was just an awful lot of rain.”

The campground is actually closing early for the season to help fix the problem. Repairs on several of the low-lying bridges will begin this week to prevent future flooding and evacuations.
