MONTEZUMA, Iowa -- A Grinnell man will spend up to five years in prison after receiving a plea deal in an attempted murder case.

Larry Burnell was charged with attempted murder after police say he attacked his neighbor with a stick last November.

Monday morning a Poweshiek County judge approved Burnell’s guilty plea to the lesser charge of willful injury causing serious injury, and sentenced him to up to five years in prison. He will be eligible for an earlier release.

This was the second time in three years Burnell has been charged with attempted murder. Back in 2012 he was accused of running over his ex-wife's boyfriend with a truck. Burnell took a plea deal in that case as well.
