DES MOINES, Iowa -- Detectives are investigating a former Des Moines Police Officer accused of stealing thousands in donations to a private fund.

Tarry Pote is facing two counts of theft. He resigned from the department in January.

Investigators say he took at least $10,000 from the police gym fund. The money was supposed to be used to purchase and maintain equipment.

Earlier this year, police said they were combing through years of bookkeeping to determine exactly how much was taken.

If convicted, Pote could be sentenced to up to 5 years in prison.

Police say the investigation continues and there could be additional charges.
