OSKALOOSA, Iowa- Realtor.com has named two central Iowa towns to the national “Top 10 List of Affordable Small Towns You’d Want to Live In.”

Oskaloosa was named #1 on the list, and Newton was #4.

Here is the List:

5)Austin MN
6)Spencer, IA
7)Whapeton ND
8)New Ulm MN
9)Lexington NE
10) Dumas TX

The rankings looked a several factors, the biggest one seems to be the median list price for a home. Or what is the middle price a home sells for.

Oskaloosa’s median home price is listed at $94,0000,

“We were excited to hear that we were number 1 in the Realtor. com listing” said Andrew Jensen, Executive Director of the Mahaska County Economic Development Commission. “At the same time we weren’t all that surprised, that we were near the top of the rankings, we have a great quality of life here,and that it’s an affordable place to live.”

Newton’s median home price is listed at $108,000.

“You an find a decent home in Newton at the 70 thousand dollar range, you might need to put a little work into it, but when you get into the one —one twenty’s you’re looking at a really nice home for a family,” said Lisa McKinney, a realtor with Advantage Real Estate. “The cost of living in Newton is so much less you can get so much more bang for your buck here.”

The list also considered population, and unemployment rate.

The list assessed more than 500 micropolitan areas with a population between 10,000 and 50,000.
