USDA Picks Ames Company to Provide Avian Flu Vaccines

AMES, Iowa — An Ames company has received approval for a vaccine to treat the avian flu.

The  U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a $6 million contract to Harris Vaccines. The department wants the company to provide it with 48 million doses of the vaccine over the next two years.

The virus recently spread across 15 states killing 50 million chickens and turkeys.

Almost 34 million birds were lost in Iowa alone.
