DES MOINES, Iowa -- Realtors say online scammers are posing as real estate agents and home buyers and renters are getting caught in the trap, costing them thousands of dollars.

Scammers will post homes for rent on websites like Craigslist, but they are actually for sale by real estate companies.

Remax Real Estate Concepts Broker Shane Torres says the crooks are listing the properties for significantly less than what they are worth. They then ask potential renters to wire or send a cashier’s check to an address either out of the state or out of the country.

Torres says people should pay close attention to offers that seem too good to be true

Another thing torres cautions people to be on the lookout for is online listings with few pictures or little information about the property.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says it hasn't had any cases of fraud reported.
