JOHNSTON, Iowa - This week the City of Johnston celebrates six months since it became the first Home Base Iowa Community in the Metro. In that time, Johnson businesses have hired 10 veterans.

"We are thrilled this important initiative is taking off and veterans are taking a closer look at our community," said Johnston Mayor Paula Dierenfeld. "Johnston is proud to welcome them with open arms, say 'thank you', and make their transition as easy as possible."

Seventeen groups in Johnston have become Home Base Iowa Businesses, which means they've pledged a certain number of veteran hires by the end of 2018. Since becoming HBI Businesses, city officials say many of them have reported an increase in veteran applicants.

Johnston HBI Businesses include: DuPont Pioneer, John Deere Financial, Delta Dental of Iowa, Texas Roadhouse, Shazam, Inc., the City of Johnston, Hyperion Field Club, Iowa National Guard - Camp Dodge, Trostel's Greenbriar, Farmers Insurance Group, Office Installation Services, Inc., Casey's General Store, Hy-Vee, MidAmerican Energy, Unity Point Health, Kum & Go, and the Iowa Bankers Association.
