DES MOINES, Iowa — The trial of a man accused of beating an elderly man to death is scheduled to begin Thursday.

Police say 19-year-old Ngor Makuey broke into a home on East 46th Street last July and assaulted 97-year-old Rupert Anderson and his wife Harriet.

Rupert died at the hospital from his injuries and his wife survived.

Makuey lived across the street from the couple. He faces first degree murder and attempted murder charges. His attorney is using the insanity defense in his case.

Makuey waived his right to a jury trial, which means  judge will hear Makuey’s case and determine the verdict.
