IOWA CITY, Iowa — The outbreak has affected more than 100 people in Iowa City since mid-July.
The mumps is highly contagious and is spread through contaminated saliva, so the university is trying to put an end to it.
Students are now packing the Memorial Union for their free vaccination. This will be the third vaccination for students.
“It’s our hope that the more students that get vaccinated with this third one will up our collective immunity to the mumps, and then we’ll slow this outbreak,” says Lisa James, University of Iowa nurse.
Nurses say the students actually had to get the first two rounds of the MMR vaccine to become enrolled in the University of Iowa.
