DES MOINES, Iowa -- For the past 12 years, United Way of Central Iowa has compiled Holiday Helping Hand, a listing of volunteer opportunities for central Iowans to help their neighbors during the holiday months.

“The need is large in Central Iowa during the holiday season,” said Elisabeth Buck, United Way of Central Iowa. “There are a lot of families that are struggling. We have such a generous community and local charities go above and beyond to help.”

This year’s holiday guide lists 150 ways to volunteer or donate. This includes everything from serving holiday meals, to assembling food baskets, to serving our elderly population, or donating to food drives.

“I think our generosity increases during the holidays because we want everyone to feel special,” says Buck.  “If you think about those who are not as fortunate as you are, it’s easy to donate your time, your effort and your talents.”

Many nonprofits seek donations of food, clothing, winter coats, and toys for families in need.

“Those types of gifts are so important,” says Buck. “Charities are very flexible, they know all of us can be busy during the season. Maybe, when you’re out shopping buy an extra gift or food item.”

The holidays are the peak time of the year for volunteering, especially for volunteers who want to serve meals and deliver gifts.

There is a great need for volunteers year-round for nonprofits, but the holidays are a time when volunteers can really make a difference for our central Iowa neighbors.

“Even if you can’t help during this time of year, there are always opportunities to help,” says Buck. “It doesn’t stop at Christmas. You can make it your New Year’s resolution.”

United Way’s volunteer website has hundreds of year-round volunteer opportunities to help out in our community.
