DES MOINES, Iowa — One person was killed and another injured when a car slammed into a utility pole Monday morning in Des Moines.

It happened at about 8:40 a.m. in the 600 block of 35th Street. Police said witnesses told them the vehicle was traveling southbound on 35th Street at a high rate of speed when the accident occurred.

Police said Scalicity Perez, also known as Scalicity Boyd, 22, of Des Moines, was killed in the crash. Troy Mure, Jr., 24, of Des Moines, was injured and taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The vehicle involved in the crash was left heavily damaged and wrapped around a nearby tree. Police closed 35th Street for much of the day while they conducted their investigation. They are looking into whether the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol when the accident happened.

Utility crews assisted at the scene to make sure it was safe for first responders.
