Franchise Fee Letters

DES MOINES, Iowa – Residents of Des Moines are moving closer to finally getting their franchise fee refunds.

It’s a refund they’ve already been paying for more than a year. Letters began going out this week explaining how to file a claim for a share of the refund.

The city is paying back around $40 million in fees it illegally charged years ago.

However, the refunds aren’t technically refunds.

The money residents are being given is being paid for by a bond, a bond that in turn is paid for by a legal increase in the franchise fee.

There is still now word on how much money individual residents will get from the city.
