Country of Origin Labeling tariffs may start as soon as next week.
The World Trade Organization officially authorizes Canada and Mexico to retaliate against U.S. labeling laws as soon as Friday, but according to a WTO meeting it's more likely next week.
Canada and Mexico can impose up to a billion dollars in tariffs because of losses to COOL. In a joint statement, they called on Congress to repeal the labeling requirements for beef and pork to stop the retaliation.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says they would rather not have the retaliatory measures but they will stand up for farmers and Canadians he says unfairly affected by COOL. In the omnibus spending bill Congress is trying to pass this week, there could be a repeal of COOL.
