The West Des Moines Police Department has some reminders for Iowans in order to prevent burglaries to homes and vehicles over the holidays.

If you’re traveling out of town, police suggest having your mail and other deliveries stopped. Packages and piled-up mail is a sign to burglars that no one is home. The department also said to leave lights on inside and outside your home.

Neighbors can also be helpful while you’re away.

“Ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your residence, park in your driveway, shovel snow, etc. and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately,” the department said.

To prevent a vehicle burglary, West Des Moines police suggest keeping valuables and new purchase out of sight like, in the trunk, and to park in well-lit areas.
